Legal Assistant

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Review case materials pertaining to Federal Tort Claims Act; Merit Systems Protection Board appeals; Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints; Federal Labor Relations Authority charges; other employment litigation matters; and Medical Care Cost recovery. Reviews all paperwork and identifies any deficiencies such as missing documents, supporting documents, and inaccurate/missing data. Contacts appropriate VAMC personnel to obtain required documentation. Use the Regional Counsel computerized data information system (GCLAWS). Interviews claimants or potential witnesses; summarizes and explains case files; depositions, or interrogatories; prepares exhibits; manages case follow-up for the attorney; searches for, extracts, and compiles information to be used in evidence; inputs and accesses case information; assists attorneys in researching appeals, briefs, pleadings, and other legal documents and provides findings to attorney. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. GS-7:
To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level. Specialized
Experience:
Is defined as experience providing trial support to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, conduct factual research, develop tables of contents and indices to briefs, and prepare courtroom presentations. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
