Job Description Inpatient Psychiatry The Inpatient Care unit at MedStar Harbor Hospital is designed for patients 18 years and older who require 24-hour care.
We focus on patient-tailored recovery and work to reintegrate our patients into the community as soon as possible.
Our structured environment includes individual and group therapies, group activities, and medication management and education.
Crisis Stabilization for Behavioral Health Patients The inpatient unit at MedStar Harbor is a short-term facility focused on recovery and reintegration into the community.
Many of our patients will receive referrals to outpatient services or our partial hospitalization program.
We address a patient''s immediate crisis and then connect them with a longer term treatment plan and community resources upon discharge.
Our unit is equipped with state-of-the-art psychiatry safety features, as well as 24-hour monitoring.
We also provide 24-hour nursing care.
Our structured environment allows patients to participate in group and individual therapies and activities.
Each session is designed to empower patients with coping skills and exercises that will help manage their symptoms.
We emphasize the importance of understanding your diagnosis and symptoms.
Job Summary Independently assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care of patients from admissions through discharge.
Provides professional nursing care for patients in accordance with established procedures and coordinates care planning with other members of the healthcare team.
Functions in leadership role.
Practices nursing as outlined by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act.
Minimum Qualifications Education/Training Valid RN license in the State of Maryland.
Experience 1 year RN experience (with provision of services to psychiatric patients).
License/Certification/Registration CPR certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrated ability to precept.
Demonstrated high level of clinical competence.
Ability to provide therapeutic interventions.
Ability to make independent decisions consistent with clinical needs, department and hospital protocols, standards of care, policies and procedures.
Strong organizational skills.
Strong interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication.
Basic computer skills preferred.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Administers and monitors medications.
Assesses, monitors, and reassesses mental, emotional, and medical status of patients; documents and reports in accordance with policy.
Completes a thorough initial assessment and develops initial interventions and/or care plans for each patient.
Serves as a resource in planning care for complex patients.
Completes all documentation relevant to activities.
Complies with and ensures adherence to all documentation standards.
Complies with all data collection, entry, and reporting requirements.
Consistently demonstrates effective documentation practices and develops strategies to ensure complete documentation of patient care.
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
Seeks opportunities to participate in developing/revising standards of practice to meet changing patient population requirements.
Demonstrates effective therapy and teaching skills in leading therapeutic and education groups.
Develops and implements health teaching for patients, families, and caregivers.
Effectively uses and adapts a variety of teaching resources in meeting the learning needs of patients/families.
Participates as member of the treatment team to develop and implement multi-disciplinary treatment plans, monitor treatment progress, and plan for discharge.
Assists others in developing, revising, and coordinating patient''s plan of care.
Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Participates in the management of aggressive patients as needed to ensure the safety of patient, self and others.
Recognizes early warning signs of escalating behaviors and intervenes as appropriate.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with specialists as required, and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Facilitates collaboration among other health team members fostering effective communication with other disciplines.
Supervises emergency nursing interventions as needed.
Consistently demonstrates effective leadership behavior.
Supports the social worker and discharge planner in development of a comprehensive discharge plan.
Models patient/family advocacy.
