BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The primary focus of the Economic Empowerment Intern will be to assist employment specialists with day to day activities that contribute to the self sufficiency of refugees and asylees. The position will work closely with the IRC Employment Program which provides services to all employable adults that are resettled. Benefits of working with the Employment Program include learning about refugees and new cultures, working in a diverse and multi-cultural environment, experience working at an internationally recognized non-profit organization and a first-hand look at how IRC's programs facilitate the social integration of refugees in Baltimore.
Essential Functions:
Work one-on-one with refugees and asylees to identify barriers to employment and develop an understanding of the US job search process.
Prepare clients for interviews through one-on-one coaching and Job Readiness Training
Collaborate closely with assigned employment specialist in creating and implementing employability plans for all clients
Identify potential employers and initiate contact by searching online and cold-calling
Accompany clients to job interviews and assist with the completion of new hire paperwork
Assist in fundraising goals by coordinating donation deliveries
Other duties as identified by the Employment Specialist
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Intern will become familiar with Maryland specific cash assistance and its requirements
Intern will learn to communicate effectively with clients across cultures
Intern will learn to present job preparedness training to targeted client groups
REQUIREMENTS:
Self-motivated; able to work independently
Creativity and follow through with all projects
Excellent communication and writing skills, including cross-cultural communicative skills
Works well in a fast-paced environment and adapts quickly to change
Strong interest in refugee and asylee issues or workforce development
Some knowledge of the following languages is a plus (but not required) Arabic, Burmese, Chin, Tigrinya, Spanish, Kinyarwanda or Swahili
3 month minimum, at least 24 hours per week, Mon-Fri 9am-5pm
Strong preference for current students and recent graduates
TIME COMMITMENT:
Summer interns are required to work at least 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the entire summer. Interns who can intern full-time (40 hours a week) are strongly preferred.
Fall and Spring interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 12 weeks in the Fall and Spring

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
