Overview:
The Baltimore Sun seeks a dynamic editor to lead our coverage of crime, police and courts and education in the Baltimore area.
This beat is vital to our public-service mission as a news organization and key to furthering The Baltimore Sun as the pre-eminent news source in the region.
This person would be responsible for assigning, editing and producing content that serves our audience on multiple platforms (mobile site, desktop, apps, social, newsletters, print, etc.
).
This editor would ensure quick response to breaking news while directing a talented team to produce thoughtful enterprise, analysis and investigative projects that readers can't find anywhere else.
Beyond supervising a core group of beat reporters, he or she would work with visual journalists and multimedia journalists to develop additional and innovative ways to tell stories in a compelling manner digitally.
This role requires not only guiding stories from idea conception to final edit, but also writing compelling headlines, maximizing SEO and keeping digital channels updated in a hypertimely manner.

Responsibilities:
Guide reporters on story and content development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced and compelling.
Supervise reporters to develop enterprise pieces providing contextual news and informationEnsure content is edited quickly for digital distributionUse expertise and good judgment in assigning content in the most appropriate formats, such as stories, takeaways, photo galleries, video, audio, timelines, charts, graphics and interactive toolsEnsure that headlines are optimized for search engines and social.
Help manage the timeliness and presentation of any topic area or digital channel assigned to him/her.
Use audience metrics/analytics and keen news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategy.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience.
Excellent writing and editing skillsPrior experience as a supervisorProven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.
1-2 years of professional Web site production experience is preferred.
Fluency in Web technology and online content publishing requiredMust work well in a team environment, have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to changeMust be technically savvy and able to quickly master new processes and software tools used for content editing and productionPersonal or professional experience using Web-based social networks is preferred, or must become adept at using them.
