The social worker in the Opiate Agonist Treatment program provides specialized evidenced based individual, family, and group psychotherapy and case management services to a medically and psychiatrically complex patient population. A large proportion of patients who are admitted to the OATP have multiple co-occurring disorders, many of which are life-threatening. Although the Social Worker functions independently, the incumbent participates in an interdisciplinary treatment team that focuses on best treatment practices to help patients discontinue the use of opioids and other illicit substances and alcohol, and make positive life changes. The social worker collaborates with other disciplines within Mental Health and throughout the hospital and serves as the advocate, therapist and treatment coordinator for this complex and often difficult-to-engage patient population. The most qualified candidate has evidenced based training in relevant modalities such as Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and knowledge of 12-Step Facilitation. Additionally, the most successful candidate is trained and familiar with case management practices and can assist patients with addressing issues in all arenas of their lives that are causing distress, impairment or harm, and communicates directly with other caregivers, providers or family members as appropriate or necessary to best facilitate change. The social worker may also assist with facilitating resource allocation such as housing, food, transportation and local, State and Federal benefitsand other duties as required or assigned.

_BASIC REQUIREMENTS_
U.S. Citizenship : Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy . English Language Proficiency Social Worker must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Education :Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work _may not_be substituted for the master's degree in social work.
State Licensure/Certification/Registration/Trademark Persons hired or reassigned to Social Worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must currently possess a licensed or certified at the Master's level to independently practice social work in a state.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : It is VA policy to ensure that all selected applicants and employed personnel are physically, mentally and emotionally fit to perform the duties of the position to which assigned. A pre-placement physical examination is required for all full-time, part-time and intermittent employees identified by VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness for candidates for appointment in VA. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies.

GS-12: A minimum of two (2) years of professional social work experience is required, with at least one (1) year of the experience comparable to the next lower level or equivalent under qualified social work supervision. This experience must have demonstrated broad knowledge of social work and superior skill and judgment in professional practice that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled, such as: advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities, ability to make psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses, & determine priorities; advanced and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities to include individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy & advanced level psychosocial and/or case management interventions used; advanced knowledge and expert skill in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area; ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on psychosocial treatment of patients & teach and mentor them; and ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, demonstrating innovation in the creation of new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention along with writing policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines.
ASSUMPTIONS REGARDING YOUR EXPERIENCE
In addition to the basic requirement (see above), the following criteria must be net when determining the grade of candidates:
1.Advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Ability to determine priority for services and provide specialized treatment services.
2. Advanced and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management interventions used in the treatment of veterans with polytraumatic injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.
3.Advanced knowledge and expert skill in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services. Ability to coordinate the delivery of specialized psychosocial services and programs. Ability to design system changes based on empirical findings.
4.Ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients treated in the specialty area, rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills. Ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or for specialty certifications.
5.Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, demonstrating innovation in the creation of new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention to identify and address specialized clinical needs. Ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the specialty population or specialty treatment program.
